25 years of re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Finland

Finland recognized the re-established independent State of Lithuania on 28 August 1991. Diplomatic relations was re-established on the same day.

Culturally the two countries had the basis on which it was possible to continue to build bilaterial relationships but the political-diplomatic relations after Lithuania regained its independence had to be recreated.

First Embassy of the Republic of Finland after re-establishment of the state of Lithuania was opened in December 1, 1991. From 1992 to 1996, Taisto Tolvanen served as the first Ambassador of Finland to Lithuania. Diplomatic relationship between the two countries were even more strengthened after the visit of the President of the Republic of Finland Mauno Koivisto who was the first Western State Leader to visit Lithuania after 1991.

On 20 January, 1994, the President of Lithuania Algirdas Brazauskas visited Helsinki where he attended the inauguration ceremony of the Embassy of Lithuania.

From 1994 to 1997, Petras Auštrevičius served as the first Ambassador of Lithuania to Finland after the re-establishment of independence. He and his successors successfully work towards strengthening the cooperation between the two countries in political, economic, cultural fields.

On 2 September, 1994, Petras Auštrevičius, Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the Republic of Finland presented credentials to the President of the Republic of Finland Martti Ahtisaari.

On 20 January, 1994, Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to the Republic of Finland was inaugurated in Helsinki.
