Day of Restoration of the State of Lithuania commemorated in Helsinki

February 16, Day of Restoration of the State of Lithuania, was celebrated in Helsinki Cathedral Crypt on February 14.

Lithuania’s most significant politician and public figure of the twentieth century professor Vytautas Landsbergis played piano pieces by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.

The Ambassador of Lithuania to Finland Valdemaras Sarapinas in the welcome speech highlighted the importance of Restoration of Lithuania's Independence, which will mark centenary next year. He marked as well, that prof. V. Landsbergis visit in Helsinki on this special occasion to Lithuania is symbolic as professor is “a living legend, symbol of freedom and the first actual head of state”.

“The peace remains fragile [...] first of all we have to rely on ourselves and on our true friends of historical neighbourhood, like those of our common Baltic destiny with Finland,“ -  prof. Vytautas Landsbergis addressed the audience.

Prof. Vytautas Landsbergis interacted with the guests at the reception following the concert.

The event was attended by diplomats from foreign representations in Finland, Lithuanian community in Finland, representatives from businesses and cultural institutions as well as other friends of Lithuania.
