Inspiring meeting with philosopher Kristupas Sabolius
On 1st September, Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to the Republic of Finland warmly welcomed a philosophy doctor, writer and translator Kristupas Sabolius who was invited to participate in a famous philosophy festival A Night of Philosophy that took place in Helsinki contemporary art museum Kiasma.
Meeting started with an opening speech by Lithuanian Ambassador Valdemaras Sarapinas who stressed both the importance of free thought in democratic society’s daily life and the value of international academic exchange.
During the meeting philosopher Sabolius together with Finland’s Lithuanian community discussed what makes a nation and its culture mature, why image and thought hygiene is important to an individual living in the postmodern world. Guests also debated on various political issues such as the implementation of Lithuanian education reform, rise of populism in Europe and European migrant crisis.
Kristupas Sabolius graduated with Bachelor and Master’s degree in Classical Philology and Doctoral degree in Philosophy at Vilnius University. His academic career has started from Plato and Aristotle translations. In his works, Sabolius focuses most on the problem of imagination in philosophy. At the faculty of Philosophy at Vilnius University K. Sabolius gives lectures on introductions to the theory of contemporary imagination, aesthetics and philosophy. Apart from his academic career, he has as well collaborated with contemporary artists and worked as a consultant for Oskaras Koršunovas theatre. In 2004 Sabolius became a chief editor and one of the founders of an alternative culture magazine Pravda. In 2013 together with a film director Ignas Jonynas Sabolius was a co-writer of the script for the movie The Gambler, which won The Lithuanian Film Award as the best film of 2014 and became the first movie from Baltic States to enter into the program of The San Sebastian International Film Festival.
