January 13 events commemorated at the Embassy of Lithuania

25 years ago, on 13 of January, 1991 14 Lithuanians lost their lives fighting the Soviet Union’s attempts to take over the control of Vilnius TV tower and the Radio and Television Committee building. This important anniversary was commemorated with the screening of Those Who Dare, Icelandic documentary made by Mr Ólafur Rögnvaldsson, at the Embassy of Lithuania in Helsinki.

During the welcoming speech, Ambassador of Lithuania to Finland Mr Arūnas Jievaltas stressed the importance of this day reminding us that even these events are equally important for all three Baltic states.

After the screening, guests were able to share their thoughts about the movie and spend some time socialising.

Iceland’s role in the midst of 13 January events was priceless: Iceland was the first country to recognise the regained independence of Lithuania and other Baltic countries from the USSR in 1990-1991.
