LITHUANIAN GRAPHIC ART EXHIBITION “GRAPHIC.LT” IN VERLA MUSEUM

Lithuanian graphic art exhibition “graphic.LT” in VERLA museum (01-28 June, 2010) Artists: Lida Dubauskienė, Kęstutis Grigaliūnas, Eglė Kuckaitė, Evaldas Mikalauskis, Petras Repšys, Rolandas Rimkūnas, Birutė Zokaitytė Organizer: Vilnius Graphic Art centre  Lithuanian graphic art exhibition „graphic.LT“ contains over 30 prints collection created by mostly using traditional graphic art techniques. The collection is based on prints by seven nowadays middle generation graphic artists and represents contemporary Lithuanian graphics. Creation of participating artists are widely presented and well known in local as well as international visual art context. In spite of the particularity of the authors, their artistic languages contain similar motives, topics and ideas. The exhibition presents the cycle A Room created by Lida Dubauskienė in a few recent years. It requires a specific principle of reading and analyzing her artworks, which is independent of contexts that are traditionally (still) popular in art (cultural, political, social, etc.). Silk-screen prints seria Album of Vilnius is represented by famous contemporary Lithuanian graphic artist Kęstutis Grigaliūnas. Artist invited his colleagues from different walks of art (painters, sculptors, art critics, composers, poets, and other graphic artists) to participate in his Album of Vilnius. Their artworks created in different media (sketches, drawings, photographies, etc.) have been used by Grigaliūnas to produce a collection of silk-screen prints. Prints by one of the most interesting contemporary graphic artists Eglė Kuckaitė are fearful and simple on one hand, together they are elegant and delicate. The main focus is on different and associative images of women. In most of her graphics Kuckaitė follows the logics of a dream – follows something which does not have boundaries of a concrete message. Evaldas Mikalauskis is a graphic artist by nature, dedicated to his craft. Art critics call him an extreme Conceptualist among Lithuanian graphic artists. He concentrates on existing possible mythology that flow from stereotypes and complexes. His etchings offer an ironic, playful and direct look at ordinary aspects of life. The seria of dry-point prints Finnish notes are created by Petras Repšys. These works were created in 1992 during his visit to Finland. Artist uses type in his prints but grouped or single letters seems rather like visual image. Every object represented in Repšys' prints is not only a visual image, but always has a semantic meaning. Artist's works seems to be a reflection of tradition in a contemporary context. Rolandas Rimkūnas is one of public-spirited artist. His seria of prints provoke spectators for discussions about the past, the nowadays and the future of his native land. He is an artist who is interested in social and political themes which always reveal an irony, absurdity and weakness of our daily life. Birutė Zokaitytė is mostly interested in a traditional woman, hiding under the mask of a careerist or a feminist. The artist tends to see meaningful rituals in the routine of the woman. She sees importance and beauty in details. She manages to get down to earth stereotypically important things.
