The Embassy hosted an event dedicated to the theme of the new Belarus
At the event, Franak Viačorka, chief advisor of the leader of the Belarusian opposition and head of the transitional government Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, presented the institutional structure created by the Belarusian opposition, to foreign diplomats and representatives of the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Finnish Foreign Policy Institute, the University of Helsinki, and journalists' organizations.
Franak Viačorka also talked about work with international partners, upcoming activities and answered the participants' questions. The questions were about attempts to set free political prisoners, about preparations to issue a Belarusian identity document, which could be used for traveling abroad by those Belarusian citizens who cannot change their passports at the Belarussian embassies due to persecution.
Ryhor Nyzhnikau, senior expert at the Finnish Institute of International Policy, shared his insights into possible scenarios of the upcoming so-called "presidential elections" in Belarus in January 2025. Kimmo Kiljunen, Member of Parliament of Finland and former speaker of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on Belarusian issues, talked about the importance of networking by the Belarusian opposition in the European institutions.
This has been the fourth Belarus-themed event organized by the Lithuanian Embassy in Finland since 2022.
